Carl

I believe that in life you can count your real friends on one hand.

I don’t regret anything that has happened in the past, because I think you can learn from your past and become a better person, however bad it’s been. Now with Protégé I’m working on turning my anger into passion and to get it out in an art form.

An Incredible Day as a Model at SHOW studio Expectations

I didn’t really know what to expect all I knew was I was going to be a model for the day in a fashion shoot. My first expectation was that I didn’t know what style of clothes I was going to wear and that they were going to make me look strange. The make up wasn’t what I thought it was going to be at first. I thought it would be make up like a woman wears but it was more like face painting with stickers, spray paint and coloured lolly sticks!

The Brief

The photographer wanted to work in a way he’d never worked before by installing a drummer on the set to disturb his concentration to see if it brought a uniqueness to his work.

It also had a one way mirror that I couldn’t see out of but the audience the other side of the mirror could see me.

To make it interesting the crew had a dice with different limbs written on it and whatever it landed on you had to make contact with that body part of another model.

At the start of the day they asked us to write two different emotions each and t hey all went into a hat. During the shoot the photographer would call out a model’s name and then pull out an emotion from the hat that we had to express in our face.

Creative Process

I felt comfortable sharing my opinions with the whole of the team whether they were right or wrong. For example I gave my ideas to the photographer on what position we should stand in. It made me feel like part of the team. In one photo I organised the positioning of the other models including myself, three small rucksacks and two giant ones.

Normally the stylist decided what clothes I was going to wear. That was good because it helped me to find out more about different styles I could wear. Sometimes we decided together on what clothes I should wear. Now when I buy clothes I try to look more presentable and professional even more than before.

How Protégé equipped me

It has helped my confidence and my will to try nearly anything that gets thrown at me. I was confident to work with new people and to find out what they had to offer. I believed in my ideas enough to express them to the rest of the group.

I tried be patient went we had to wait for the next shoot. The more experiences I have makes me feel more and more professional.

Challenges

Posing in the same position for a long period of time makes your muscles ache! For the first shoot I didn’t really enjoy wearing ankle swingers (short trousers) because it made me look strange and feel a bit annoyed, uncomfortable and frustrated as I wanted to change to longer trousers. As the day went on the clothes got better.

The Experience

One of the best experiences I have had in a long time. It made me feel like a celebrity with all the people watching through the mirror. Although I didn’t know the other models before it felt like we had known each other for ages as we worked well as a team. I would like to take part in a fashion shoot again with a different concept so that I could experience different types of modeling and fashion. Nothing like this EVER happens in Southampton!

Drop Out Research - Malcolm X

Malcolm X grew up in a very rough and poor environment with a racist society just outside of his door. When he was still so young walking back from the market and he realised his home was burned down. He tried to put out the fire but it was too late everything he ever owned was burnt to ashes. Shortly after his father was brutally murdered. His mother could not cope and sent him to a foster home.

Marcus Garvey was Malcolm X’s role model because the things he talked about he could relate to as in standing up for his race and their rights. Later in life Malcolm X became a part of the black nationalist political group.

Ant-Role Model Research - Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson is one of the best all time fighters to ever step in the ring.

– Michael Gerald Tyson was born in 1966.

– Mike’s father left him even before he was born.

– His mother being poor and a single mum had no choice but to live in Brooklyn (New York) in an area that was violent and corrupt.

– He was abandoned and took under his wing by a boxing trainer.

– He was then surrounded by boxing and his trainer saw he had great talent.

– Mike then got adopted by his trainer.

The violence around the area he lived in and the anger inside of him to make him more violent.

I can relate to that because it’s me.
